Carduus, 2022
Introducing Carduus an illuminated sculpture that sits inside a solid oak base. Inspired by the abstracted shapes of thistles Olivia originally cut out by hand from paper the thistles overlap and interweave, creating a repeating pattern around a cylindrical shade. The sculpture is laser cut from mild sheet steel before being hand rolled, welded and patinated to create a matt black finish. The sculpture is illuminated from its oak base with a bulb that casts shadows across the room and against the walls. Light and shadows and the interplay between positive and negative space are central to Olivia’s practice.
Each sculpture is made to order and handmade in collaboration with local artisans.
